Repositioning off-screen windows with SheepDog
September 4, 2010Do you ever suffer from programs and dialogs opening up in some other dimension, outside the view area of your 2 (or 3, or 4) monitor setup? Check out SheepDog, a free, lightweight utility for repositioning off-screen windows.
This is becoming a must-have utility on ever setup I run. Amongst the tools I use, TortoiseHG most frequently pops up windows off-screen, but many other programs have been known to throw a curve ball. When this happens, it’s often incredibly difficult to find the window and pull it back into view.
SheepDog runs in the system tray and is super easy to use. In just 2 clicks or by using a hotkey combination you’ll have your lost window front and center.
I should note that, thankfully, it does not reposition or alter any visible windows – they’re left alone. All it does is pull the hidden windows to your main monitor.
There is a key combination in Windows 7 that should also work most of the time [Win + Shift + left or right arrow key], but it’s nice to have a SheepDog at the ready when you inevitably forget this shortcut.
